Entering the Gates of Ladore

The first major canyon encountered by the Powell Expedition, the Green River's Lodore Canyon opens impressively with the Gates of Lodore, two towering 800-ft tall buttresses cut from Precambrian bedrock looking straight out of a Lord of the Rings scene.

Powell's expedition is responsible for many fun places names in the Dinosaur National Monument area including Gates of Ladore, Disaster Falls, Triplet Falls and Hell's Half Mile.
