B-17E Flying Fortress “My Gal Sal”
One of the highlights of my trip to New Orleans was visiting the National World War II Museum. It's truly a world-class facility on par with the Smithsonian! This image features a view from the catwalk above the US Freedom Pavilion at the Boeing Center with a B-17E Flying Fortress taking center stage. “My Gal Sal” was taking the dangerous northern route from the US to England before being forced to make an emergency landing on a Greenland ice cap due to weather. The crew was rescued ten days later, but the B-17E would have to wait on the ice over fifty years to be restored and here it is to tell its story.
